What is physiotherapy?

What is the eligibility to get physiotherapy services?

Children and youth (up to 19 years of age, or 21 if they are attending secondary school) who reside within the districts of Cochrane and Temiskaming and communities in the James Bay area with a physical, developmental and/or communication disability.

What is the eligibility to get speech and language pathology services?

Children and youth (up to 19 years of age, or 21 if they are attending secondary school) who reside in the districts of Cochrane and Temiskaming as well as communities in the James Bay area with a physical, developmental or communication disability.

Does my child need a doctor’s referral for speech therapy?

A referral for Speech-Language Pathology services at Inspire Centre does not require a doctor’s referral. Referrals can be made by caregivers directly through our website or by contacting Inspire Centre directly.

Is speech therapy available online or in person?

Speech and Language services can be offered both in-person or through virtual therapy options to accommodate different family needs and schedules.

Can speech therapy help with feeding and swallowing issues?

Yes! Speech-Language Pathologists also work with children who have difficulties with chewing, swallowing, or transitioning to solid foods. Therapy can help improve muscle coordination and make mealtimes easier.

What can I do at home to support my child’s speech development?

Encourage conversations and active listening Read books together and talk about the pictures Use gestures and facial expressions to reinforce communication Give your child time to respond in conversations Play interactive language-building games

How long does speech therapy take?

The length of therapy varies based on your child’s needs, goals, and progress. Some children improve within a few months, while others may require ongoing support over several years.

What happens during a speech-language assessment?

A Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP) will observe and evaluate your child’s speech, language, and communication skills through play-based activities and structured tests. They will then provide recommendations and, if needed, develop a personalized therapy plan.

At what age should I seek speech therapy for my child?

Early intervention is key! If you have concerns about your child’s communication development at any age, it’s best to seek an assessment. Many children benefit from support as early as 18 months to 2 years old.
